'der Unterschied' usually names the feature itself: two things are not the same, and you ask what the difference is. 'die Unterscheidung' often means the process of recognizing or naming differences. But it can also mean the difference itself, especially in somewhat more formal texts. Learners can easily confuse the words because they are very close to each other. In everyday language, 'Unterschied' is usually the more natural choice. 'Unterscheidung' fits better when the focus is on precisely separating or classifying terms, groups, or cases.
