A simple, often open structure that provides protection from rain, wind, or sun. It is often found at bus stops, on hiking trails, or in gardens.

'Unterstand' (shelter) is made up of the preposition 'unter' (under) and the noun 'Stand' (stand), derived from 'stehen' (to stand). So it literally describes a place where one can stand 'under' something in order to be protected.

To express movement, you use 'in den Unterstand' (into the shelter, accusative). To describe a location, you use 'im Unterstand' (in the shelter, dative).

'Unterkunft' and 'Unterstand' look similar, and both can provide protection, but they do not mean the same thing. An 'Unterkunft' is a place where you can live or stay overnight temporarily. An 'Unterstand' is usually a simple, often open structure that protects you from rain, wind, or sun, for example at a bus stop or on a hiking trail. The words can be confused because of the beginning 'Unter-' and because both have something to do with protection. For sleeping and living somewhere, use 'Unterkunft'. For short-term protection from the weather, 'Unterstand' is the right fit.
