A military term for a protected space, often underground, that protects soldiers or equipment from enemy fire.

'Unterstand' (shelter) is made up of the preposition 'unter' (under) and the noun 'Stand' (stand), derived from 'stehen' (to stand). So it literally describes a place where one can stand 'under' something in order to be protected.

To express movement, you use 'in den Unterstand' (into the shelter, accusative). To describe a location, you use 'im Unterstand' (in the shelter, dative).

Bunker and Unterstand can both refer to a protected space used for protection from shelling. A Bunker is usually a permanent, heavily fortified structure, while a military Unterstand is often simpler. Use Bunker for substantial fortifications and Unterstand for a simpler field shelter.
