Usage tips
Origin and conjugation
'Updaten' (to update) is a loanword from English. It is conjugated like a regular German verb. The past participle for the perfect tense is 'geupdatet' and is formed with the auxiliary verb 'haben'.
EXAMPLE
Ich habe gestern Abend mein Handy geupdatet.
I updated my phone yesterday evening.
Context clue
You can recognize the meaning from the object: if the object is software, an app, or a device, it refers to a technical update. If the object is a person, it means to inform someone.
EXAMPLE
Ich muss dringend meine Antiviren-Software updaten.
I urgently need to update my antivirus software.
Register
The word is standard in IT. In general colloquial language, especially in the meaning of 'informing someone', it is often perceived as modern, but also as informal or as an Anglicism.
EXAMPLE
In der Firma wird erwartet, dass wir unsere Projektpläne täglich updaten.
At the company, we are expected to update our project plans daily.
Sentence structure with a person
When you inform a person, the fixed structure is: 'jemanden (Akkusativ) updaten' (to update someone, accusative). Optionally, you can add what you are informing them about with 'über + Akkusativ' (about + accusative).
EXAMPLE
Der Chef hat uns über die neuen Pläne geupdatet.
The boss updated us on the new plans.

updaten vs informieren
to inform
'informieren' and 'updaten' can both mean that someone receives new information. 'informieren' is neutral and fits many situations, including official or written ones. 'updaten' is more colloquial and usually means bringing someone up to date, especially when something has changed. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with news and knowledge. When it is generally about giving information, 'informieren' is more natural. When someone should know what has happened since the last update, 'updaten' sounds appropriate.
