Usage tips
Verbs ending in '-ieren'
Verbs that end in '-ieren' are always regular and inseparable. The past participle is formed without 'ge-': 'hat informiert' (has informed).
EXAMPLE
Der Reiseleiter hat uns über die Geschichte der Stadt informiert.
The tour guide informed us about the history of the city.
Preposition 'über'
To indicate the topic of the information, the preposition 'über' (about) with the accusative is almost always used.
EXAMPLE
Ich informiere mich gerade über die neuen Regelungen.
I am currently informing myself about the new regulations.
Informing someone
When you give another person information, the structure is: subject + informiert + person (accusative) + über + topic (accusative).
EXAMPLE
Bitte informieren Sie mich sofort, wenn es Neuigkeiten gibt.
Please inform me immediately if there is any news.
Informing oneself
When you look for information yourself, the verb must be used reflexively: 'sich informieren' (to inform oneself). The reflexive pronoun is obligatory.
EXAMPLE
Er hat sich vor der Reise gut über das Land informiert.
He informed himself well about the country before the trip.

confusable
informieren vs erklären
to explain / declare
'erklären' and 'informieren' both have to do with knowledge, but they have a different goal. Use 'erklären' when someone is supposed to understand something, for example a rule, a task, or a function. 'informieren' means to give someone important information or to look for information yourself. Learners can easily confuse the words because explaining often also involves informing. The difference is: 'informieren' gives the news or the facts; 'erklären' makes the content understandable.
informieren
Heute informiert ihr die Kunden im Büro über die technische Störung.
Today you are informing the customers in the office about the technical problem.
erklären
Im Hausflur erklärt der Nachbar morgen, wie die neue Heizung funktioniert.
In the hallway, the neighbor will explain tomorrow how the new heating system works.
