Valley vs Tal

valley

'das Tal' and 'das Valley' basically mean a similar landscape: a lower area between higher areas. The important difference is in usage. 'Tal' is the normal German word and fits mountains, rivers, and landscapes in general. 'Valley' is an English loanword and is used in German almost only in proper names, especially in 'Silicon Valley'. Learners may confuse the words because 'Valley' looks like the English translation of 'Tal'. In German, however, you almost always say 'Tal', unless a fixed name contains 'Valley'.
