'die Erhöhung' and 'die Verdoppelung' both describe a value, amount, or number becoming larger. The important difference is the exact size of the change. 'Erhöhung' is general: something becomes greater, but it does not say by how much. 'Verdoppelung' is precise: something becomes twice as large as before. Learners may confuse the words because every 'Verdoppelung' is also an 'Erhöhung'. But not every 'Erhöhung' is a 'Verdoppelung'. If the amount simply increases, 'Erhöhung' fits. If it rises to twice the amount, 'Verdoppelung' is more precise.
