The word is derived from the adjective 'günstig' (advantageous, inexpensive). The ending '-ung' turns it into a noun. A 'Vergünstigung' (discount/benefit) is therefore an advantage or preferential treatment that is granted.

'der Vorteil' and 'die Vergünstigung' both have to do with a benefit. 'Vorteil' is more general: it can be any positive quality or useful circumstance. 'Vergünstigung' is more specific. You use it when someone gets a discount, a lower price, or special preferential treatment. So 'Vorteil' also fits with time, location, or experience. 'Vergünstigung' fits especially with offers, memberships, tickets, or particular groups.
