Usage tips
Participle as adjective
'Verkleidet' (disguised / clad) is the past participle of the verb 'verkleiden' (to disguise / to clad). The meaning depends on whether the verb is meant reflexively ('sich verkleiden' = to wear a costume) or transitively ('etwas verkleiden' = to cover a surface).
EXAMPLE
Er hat sich als Clown verkleidet.
He disguised himself as a clown.
Sentence structure with 'als'
When someone is wearing a costume, the role or character is connected with the preposition 'als' (as). The structure is always: 'verkleidet als ...' (disguised as ...).
EXAMPLE
Zum Fasching kam sie als Prinzessin verkleidet.
She came to Carnival dressed as a princess.
Sentence structure with 'mit'
When a surface is covered, the material is connected with the preposition 'mit' (with). The structure is then: 'verkleidet mit ...' (clad with ...).

verkleidet vs gekleidet
dressed
'verkleidet' and 'gekleidet' both have to do with clothing, but they do not mean the same thing. 'Gekleidet' only says that a person is wearing clothes, often with a more specific description such as elegant, warm, or badly. 'Verkleidet' means that someone is wearing clothing or a mask in order to look like another character, person, or thing. This often happens at a party or during Carnival. Learners may confuse the words because both come from clothing. Remember: 'gekleidet' describes the type of clothing; 'verkleidet' describes a costume or role.
