Verleumdung vs Beleidigung

insult

'Beleidigung' and 'Verleumdung' both have to do with harming a person's honor or reputation. A 'Beleidigung' is usually a direct hurtful statement or action, for example an insult or swear word. 'Verleumdung' is more specific: someone deliberately spreads a false claim about a person so that others think badly of them. Learners may confuse the words because both can be hurtful. In practice: for a direct offense or insult, 'Beleidigung' is more suitable. When a false story is told about someone, 'Verleumdung' is more suitable.
