verpachten

to lease out

To make land, a building, or a business (e.g., a restaurant) available for use and for generating income in exchange for regular payment (a lease payment). Unlike renting out, leasing out allows the lessee to make profits from the leased property.

verpachten vs überlassen

to leave / to entrust

'überlassen' and 'verpachten' both mean that someone is allowed to use something. 'überlassen' is very general and does not yet say exactly whether you pay for it or what rights you get. You can 'überlassen' a room, a car, or a device to someone. 'verpachten' is much more specific: it is about land, a building, or a business that someone uses in exchange for regular payment and is also allowed to make money from. So 'verpachten' is especially suitable for farms, restaurants, or plots of land. 'überlassen' is more neutral and broader.

Visual example for überlassen
verpachten

Nina erzählt, dass ihre Eltern den kleinen Garten an einen Verein verpachten.

Nina says that her parents lease out the small garden to an association.

überlassen

Meine Nachbarin überlässt mir ihr Fahrrad für das Wochenende.
