To take a trip and leave one's place of residence for a certain period of time, usually for leisure or business purposes.

'Verreisen' (to travel) is an inseparable verb. The prefix 'ver-' remains firmly attached to the verb 'reisen' (to travel) in all conjugated forms and sentence positions.
Er verreist selten, weil er seine Heimat so sehr liebt.
He rarely travels because he loves his home so much.
Since 'verreisen' (to travel) describes movement and a change of location, the perfect tense is always formed with the auxiliary verb 'sein' (to be). A common mistake is using 'haben' (to have).
Meine Nachbarn sind über die Feiertage verreist.
My neighbors went away over the holidays.
'Verreisen' (to travel) is often combined with adverbs that describe the purpose or duration of the trip. Typical phrases are 'geschäftlich verreisen' (to travel on business), 'privat verreisen' (to travel privately), 'kurz verreisen' (to go away briefly), or 'für längere Zeit verreisen' (to travel for a longer period of time).
Mein Chef ist nächste Woche geschäftlich in London.

'fahren' and 'verreisen' can both have to do with moving to another place. 'fahren' mainly says that you move by vehicle or travel to a place. This can be a short or long trip, for example to work, to the doctor, or to another city. You use 'verreisen' when someone leaves their place of residence for a certain period of time, usually for a vacation or a business trip. Learners can confuse the words because when you 'verreisen', you often also 'fahren'. But not every 'Fahrt' (trip/ride) is a 'Reise' (journey/trip): someone who takes the bus to the supermarket is not 'verreisen'.
Mein Bruder verreist nächste Woche für ein paar Tage nach Hamburg.
My brother is going away to Hamburg for a few days next week.
Nach dem Frühstück fahre ich mit dem Bus zum Arzt.
