'die Verbesserung' and 'die Verschönerung' both describe a positive change. The difference lies in the focus: a 'Verbesserung' makes something generally better, more useful, or more successful. A 'Verschönerung' makes something more beautiful to look at, for example a room, a garden, or a building. The words can be confused because something more beautiful is often also perceived as better. But when it is about function, quality, or performance, 'Verbesserung' fits better. When it is about appearance, 'Verschönerung' is more precise.
