The article changes with the case; it is shown in colour.
'Vogelspinne' (tarantula) consists of 'Vogel' (bird) and 'Spinne' (spider). The second part indicates which group of animals it belongs to; the first part does not reliably indicate its typical food.
Die Vogelspinne frisst eine Grille.
The tarantula eats a cricket.
When caring for these animals, 'eine Vogelspinne halten' (to keep a tarantula) and 'eine Vogelspinne füttern' (to feed a tarantula) are typical collocations. Here, 'Vogelspinne' is used as the object in the accusative case.
Mein Nachbar hält eine Vogelspinne und füttert sie mit Insekten.
My neighbor keeps a tarantula and feeds it insects.
When discussing growth, you will often see 'die Vogelspinne häutet sich' (the tarantula molts). The verb 'sich häuten' (to molt) is used reflexively here: 'Die Vogelspinne' (the tarantula) is the subject, and 'sich' (itself) goes with it.
Die junge Vogelspinne hat sich vor wenigen Tagen gehäutet.
The young tarantula molted a few days ago.
