Word formation
The word is simply made up of 'voll' (full) and 'Zeit' (time). It literally means that you work the entire, full working time.
EXAMPLE
Ein Vollzeitjob hat in der Regel 40 Stunden pro Woche.
A full-time job usually has 40 hours per week.
Two ways to use it
'Vollzeit' (full-time) is mainly used in two ways: as an adverb after a verb or as the first part of a compound noun. As an adverb, it is written in lowercase.
EXAMPLE
Mein Bruder arbeitet vollzeit als Programmierer.
My brother works full-time as a programmer.
Typical collocations
In the context of work, fixed combinations like 'vollzeit arbeiten' (to work full-time), 'vollzeit beschäftigt sein' (to be employed full-time), or 'in Vollzeit tätig sein' (to work full-time) are very common. The nouns 'der Vollzeitjob' (full-time job) and 'die Vollzeitstelle' (full-time position) are also typical.
