'das Geschenk' is the general term and fits many occasions, such as a birthday, a visit, or a thank-you. 'das Weihnachtsgeschenk' is more specific and means a gift for Christmas. Learners may confuse the words because every Weihnachtsgeschenk is also a Geschenk. But not every Geschenk is a Weihnachtsgeschenk. If the occasion of Christmas is important, you say 'Weihnachtsgeschenk'.
