'Weisheitszahn' (wisdom tooth) is made up of 'Weisheit' (wisdom) and 'Zahn' (tooth). The name refers to the fact that this tooth usually appears only in adulthood, when people traditionally have more life experience and wisdom.
Viele Menschen bekommen ihren ersten Weisheitszahn erst nach dem 18. Lebensjahr.
Many people do not get their first wisdom tooth until after the age of 18.
Verbs such as 'durchbrechen' (to erupt), 'wachsen' (to grow), 'ziehen' (to pull) and 'entfernen' (to remove) are often used with 'Weisheitszahn' (wisdom tooth). Phrases such as 'ein schiefer Weisheitszahn' (a wisdom tooth growing at an angle) and 'eine Weisheitszahn-Operation' (wisdom tooth surgery) are also common.
Mein Weisheitszahn wächst schief und verursacht starke Schmerzen.
My wisdom tooth is growing at an angle and causing severe pain.
When discussing treatment, the construction 'sich einen Weisheitszahn ziehen lassen' (to have a wisdom tooth pulled) is often used. This means that a dentist removes the tooth and the person concerned has the procedure carried out.
Ich lasse mir nächste Woche den Weisheitszahn ziehen.
I'm having my wisdom tooth pulled next week.
