An official list that ranks and compares people, teams, or even countries internationally according to their performance in a particular field (often sports).

The word is made up of 'Welt' (world) and 'Rangliste' (ranking list). A 'Rangliste' is a list that sorts something according to an order (rank). A 'Weltrangliste' therefore ranks people or teams at an international level.
Die Universität ist in der Weltrangliste der besten Hochschulen aufgestiegen.
The university has risen in the world ranking of the best universities.
To express a position on the list, you use 'auf' (on), e.g. 'auf Platz eins stehen' (to be in first place). To describe movement within the list, you use 'in' (in), e.g. 'in der Liste aufsteigen' (to move up in the list).
