Usage tips
Word family
'Die Wette' (the bet) is the noun related to the verb 'wetten' (to bet). When you bet, you enter into a bet. This connection helps you learn both words together.
EXAMPLE
Ich wette mit dir um ein Eis, dass meine Mannschaft gewinnt.
I bet you an ice cream that my team will win.
Typical collocations
'Eine Wette' (a bet) is often combined with the verbs 'abschließen' (to make/conclude), 'eingehen' (to enter into), 'gewinnen' (to win), or 'verlieren' (to lose). The stake of the bet is expressed with the preposition 'um' + accusative.
EXAMPLE
Wir haben eine Wette um 10 Euro abgeschlossen.
We made a bet for 10 euros.
Fixed expression
The expression 'Ich wette, dass ...' (I bet that ...) is often used to express a strong conviction, even if you are not really making a bet. It means something like 'Ich bin mir sicher, dass ...' (I'm sure that ...).
EXAMPLE
Ich wette, dass es heute noch regnen wird.
I bet it will still rain today.
Fixed expression
The expression 'um die Wette' means that you do something in direct competition with others. It is often combined with verbs of movement or activity such as 'laufen' (to run), 'schwimmen' (to swim), or 'essen' (to eat).
EXAMPLE
Die beiden Sportler schwammen um die Wette über den See.
The two athletes raced each other swimming across the lake.

Wette vs Einsatz
operation / effort / use
'der Einsatz' and 'die Wette' both belong to situations where something is uncertain and you can lose something. 'die Wette' is the whole agreement: two or more people predict what will happen, and afterward someone owes something. 'der Einsatz' is only what you risk in it, for example money or an object. The words can be confused because 'Wette' can sometimes also mean the amount being risked. Strictly speaking, however, the bet is the game or agreement, and the stake is the value that is at risk.
Wette
Ihr habt die Wette verloren, weil der Zug doch pünktlich war.
You lost the bet because the train was actually on time.
Einsatz
Bei dem Kartenspiel beträgt der Einsatz nur zwei Euro.
