A plan that specifies at what times certain tasks should be completed or events should take place.

This word is a simple compound of 'die Zeit' (time) and 'der Plan' (plan). So it literally means a plan for time and is therefore easy to understand.

Common verbs used with 'Zeitplan' (schedule) are 'einen Zeitplan erstellen' (to create a schedule), 'den Zeitplan einhalten' (to stick to the schedule), or 'den Zeitplan ändern' (to change the schedule).

To describe the progress of a project, German uses fixed expressions: 'im Zeitplan sein/liegen' (to be on schedule), 'hinter dem Zeitplan sein' (to be behind schedule), or 'vor dem Zeitplan sein' (to be ahead of schedule).

'das Programm' and 'der Zeitplan' both have to do with planning. 'das Programm' describes more the content or items that are supposed to take place, for example at an event or in a course. 'der Zeitplan' emphasizes times and deadlines: When does something start, how long does it take, by when does something have to be finished? The words can be confused because a program often includes times too. If the content is important, 'Programm' fits better; if the exact timing is important, 'Zeitplan' fits better.
Yara schreibt einen Zeitplan, damit morgen alle Aufgaben rechtzeitig fertig werden.
