The control of information, opinions, and artistic works (such as books, films, the press) by state or other authoritarian authorities. The aim is to suppress or alter content that is unwanted or considered harmful.

grade
A grade or written assessment for schoolwork. This usage is now rather outdated or used regionally (e.g., in Austria).

Careful: 'die Zensur' means 'censorship' in German. It is a false friend of the English word 'censure,' which means 'Tadel' (reprimand) or 'scharfe Kritik' (harsh criticism).

ban / prohibition
Das Verbot and die Zensur can both lead to a book not being allowed to appear publicly. Verbot refers to a specific official prohibition, while Zensur means the control and possible suppression or alteration of unwanted content. If the content itself is the main focus, „Zensur“ is more precise.
