The control of information, opinions, and artistic works (such as books, films, the press) by state or other authoritarian authorities. The aim is to suppress or alter content that is unwanted or considered harmful.

'die Kontrolle' and 'die Zensur' can both mean that someone checks or decides what is allowed. However, 'Kontrolle' is much more general and can be neutral, for example in connection with safety or quality. 'Zensur' is a specific type of control: information, opinions, books, films, or news are checked, changed, or banned. The goal is often to suppress unwanted content. The words can be confused because censorship is a form of control. But not every 'Kontrolle' is 'Zensur'. 'Zensur' only fits when it is about content and its suppression.
