Describes a person's current mood, feeling, or inner state. It is used almost exclusively in this fixed expression.
example
Nach dieser traurigen Nachricht ist mir gar nicht nach Feiern zumute.
After this sad news, I don't feel at all like celebrating.
Usage tips
Fixed sentence structure
'Zumute' is used almost only in the fixed expression 'jemandem ist/wird ... zumute' (someone feels/becomes ...). The person who has the feeling is always in the dative.
EXAMPLE
Mir ist heute irgendwie komisch zumute.
I feel kind of strange today.
Word structure
The expression comes from 'zu Mute sein'. The old word 'der Mut' used to mean not only 'courage', but also 'mind, sense, state of mind'. So it describes how someone feels inside.
EXAMPLE
Nach dem langen Tag war ihm elend zumute.
After the long day, he felt miserable.
Usage pattern
The negative form 'jemandem ist nicht nach etwas zumute' (someone does not feel like something) is very common. It expresses that you are not in the mood for a particular activity.
EXAMPLE
Ich gehe nicht mit ins Kino, mir ist heute nicht nach Lachen zumute.
I'm not going to the movies with you; I don't feel like laughing today.

zumute vs drauf
on it / feeling / high
'drauf' and 'zumute' can both describe a person's mood or inner state. 'Drauf' is colloquial and often appears in expressions like 'gut drauf' (in a good mood) or 'schlecht drauf' (in a bad mood). It sounds casual and everyday. 'Zumute' is used almost only in the form 'jemandem ist ... zumute' (someone feels ...), for example 'mir ist traurig zumute' (I feel sad). It sounds a bit calmer or more written. They can be confused because both talk about feelings. A practical rule is: use 'gut/schlecht drauf' for casual everyday language, and 'mir ist ... zumute' for a more precise inner feeling.
