Usage tips
Separable verb
'Zusichern' (to assure) is a separable verb. The prefix 'zu-' stands at the end in main clauses, while in subordinate clauses and in the infinitive it remains attached to the verb.
EXAMPLE
Der Verkäufer sicherte mir einen Rabatt zu.
The salesperson assured me of a discount.
Dative and accusative object
The verb 'zusichern' (to assure) requires a person in the dative (to whom something is assured) and a thing in the accusative (what is assured). The structure is therefore: subject + zusichern + dative object + accusative object.
EXAMPLE
Ich sichere Ihnen meine volle Diskretion zu.
I assure you of my full discretion.
Use with subordinate clause
Instead of an accusative object, 'zusichern' (to assure) can also be followed by a subordinate clause with 'dass' (that) or an infinitive construction with 'zu' (to). The person remains in the dative.
EXAMPLE
Sie sicherte mir zu, dass sie sich um alles kümmern wird.
She assured me that she would take care of everything.
Formal context
'Zusichern' (to assure) is often used in formal, business, or legal contexts. It expresses a strong, binding promise or guarantee.
EXAMPLE
Die Regierung sicherte den Bürgern schnelle Hilfe zu.
The government assured citizens of quick help.

zusichern vs verpflichten
to oblige / commit
'verpflichten' and 'zusichern' can both have to do with a binding promise. 'zusichern' is used when someone firmly promises or guarantees something to another person. The focus is on giving security to the other person. 'sich verpflichten' means that you yourself take on a task or responsibility and are bound to it. Learners may confuse the words because both sound more serious than a simple 'versprechen' (to promise). Remember: you assure someone of something ('jemandem etwas zusichern'), but you commit yourself to something ('sich zu etwas verpflichten').
zusichern
Leon hat dem Team seine Unterstützung für das Projekt zugesichert.
Leon assured the team of his support for the project.

Wir haben uns verpflichtet, den Bericht bis Freitag fertigzustellen.
We committed ourselves to finishing the report by Friday.
