The word 'zustande' is used almost exclusively in the fixed expressions 'zustande kommen' (to come about) and 'zustande bringen' (to manage to do / bring about). It cannot stand alone.

'Zustande' is an old form of 'zu Stande'. It literally means 'to a standing' or 'into a state'. The expressions therefore describe how something reaches a fixed, realized state.

The difference lies in the activity: 'zustande kommen' (to come about) describes a process that happens (passive). 'zustande bringen' (to manage / bring about) describes an action that someone performs actively and often with effort (active).
