This could be a child in fifth grade or a teenager in a higher grade. 'der Abiturient' is more specific: it refers to a student shortly before the Abitur, during the Abitur exam, or directly after it. Learners may confuse the words because an Abiturient is usually also a Schüler. But not every Schüler is an Abiturient.
