Separable verb
'Abschälen' (to peel off) consists of 'ab' and 'schälen' (to peel) and is separable. In a main clause, 'ab' is separated and placed at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb stays together. With the infinitive using 'zu', 'zu' comes between 'ab' and 'schälen'.

Two object patterns
The accusative object can refer either to the food or to the layer being removed. If you name the layer, you can add 'von' (from) with the dative to say what you are removing it from.

Reflexive construction
