Introduces a contrast or another side of a situation. It is often used in the combination 'einerseits ... anderseits' (on the one hand ... on the other hand) to contrast two different aspects.
example
Einerseits möchte ich in der Stadt wohnen, anderseits liebe ich die Ruhe auf dem Land.
On the one hand, I want to live in the city; on the other hand, I love the peace and quiet of the countryside.
Usage tips
Typical pattern
'Anderseits' (on the other hand) is very often used as part of the pair 'einerseits … anderseits' (on the one hand ... on the other hand). This structure is ideal for presenting two sides of the same coin or opposing arguments.
EXAMPLE
Einerseits ist die Wohnung sehr zentral, anderseits ist sie auch ziemlich laut.
On the one hand, the apartment is very central; on the other hand, it is also quite loud.
Word order
When 'anderseits' (on the other hand) comes at the beginning of a sentence (position 1), the conjugated verb follows immediately (position 2). This change in word order is called inversion.
EXAMPLE
Die Arbeit macht mir Spaß. Anderseits verdiene ich nicht sehr viel.
I enjoy the work. On the other hand, I don't earn very much.
Word structure
The word is made up of 'ander' (other) and 'seits' (side). So it literally means 'on the other side' and introduces a counterpoint.
EXAMPLE
Ich würde dir gern helfen, anderseits habe ich wirklich keine Zeit.
I would like to help you; on the other hand, I really don't have any time.

anderseits vs allerdings
however / certainly
'allerdings' and 'anderseits' can both show a contrast. 'allerdings' limits a previous statement and works similarly to 'aber' (but) or 'jedoch' (however). 'anderseits' places another side of a topic next to it, often together with 'einerseits' (on the one hand). The risk of confusion comes from the fact that both express a contrast. If you are only correcting or limiting a statement, use 'allerdings' more often. If you are weighing two sides, 'anderseits' fits better.
anderseits
Einerseits ist die Wohnung klein, anderseits liegt sie sehr zentral.
On the one hand, the apartment is small; on the other hand, it is very centrally located.
allerdings
Die Klasse ist gut vorbereitet, allerdings fehlen noch zwei wichtige Bücher.
The class is well prepared; however, two important books are still missing.
