Shaped, designed, or constructed according to a specific plan. Often used for gardens, parks, housing developments, or studies.
example
Der botanische Garten wurde nach verschiedenen thematischen Bereichen angelegt.
The botanical garden was designed according to different thematic areas.
Usage tips
Participle as adjective
'Angelegt' (designed/invested/geared toward) is the past participle of the separable verb 'anlegen' (to lay out / invest / put on). It is very often used like an adjective to describe the state that has resulted from the action of the verb.
EXAMPLE
Der neu angelegte Radweg ist sehr beliebt.
The newly created bike path is very popular.
Context clue
You can recognize the meaning from context: If it is about places like gardens or parks, it means 'designed'. If it is about money, it means 'invested'. If it appears with the preposition 'auf', it means 'geared toward'.
EXAMPLE
Der Garten ist sehr schön angelegt.
The garden is very beautifully designed.
Typical collocations
In the meaning 'designed', 'angelegt' (designed) is often used for planned structures. Typical nouns are 'Garten' (garden), 'Park' (park), 'Weg' (path), 'Siedlung' (housing development), or, more abstractly, 'Studie' (study).
EXAMPLE
Die Siedlung wurde sehr großzügig angelegt.
The housing development was designed very spaciously.
Use with 'in'
When it is about money, 'angelegt' (invested) almost always appears with the preposition 'in' and the accusative to name the investment target.
EXAMPLE
Ihr Geld ist sicher in Staatsanleihen angelegt.
Her money is safely invested in government bonds.
Fixed expression
You can recognize the meaning 'to be geared toward' by the fixed structure 'auf etwas angelegt sein' (to be geared toward something). The preposition 'auf' with the accusative is a clear signal here.
EXAMPLE
Diese Diskussion ist von Anfang an auf einen Streit angelegt.
This discussion is geared toward an argument from the very beginning.

angelegt vs geplant
planned
'geplant' and 'angelegt' can both have to do with a plan. 'geplant' says that something was thought out or prepared in advance. 'angelegt' is used more when something was shaped or designed according to a specific plan, for example a garden, a park, a housing development, or a study. So it often describes the form or structure of something. For appointments, meetings, or ordinary plans, 'geplant' is more natural. For something that has been designed in a lasting way, 'angelegt' fits better.
angelegt
Der neue Park ist so angelegt, dass Kinder dort sicher spielen können.
The new park is designed so that children can play there safely.
