'Archäologie' (archaeology) is an international scientific word. The ending '-logie' means 'study' or 'science' and appears in many subjects (e.g., biology). The first part, 'archäo-', comes from Greek and means 'old/ancient'.

In the context of archaeology, words like 'Ausgrabung' (excavation), 'Fund' (find), 'Überreste' (remains), and 'antike Kulturen' (ancient cultures) are very common. Typical verbs are 'studieren' (to study) or 'forschen' (to research).

'die Archäologie' and 'die Geschichtswissenschaft' both have to do with the past. That is why they can easily be confused. 'Archäologie' especially means the study of ancient cultures through things that are found, for example buildings, tools, or graves. Excavations often play an important role in this. 'Geschichtswissenschaft' is broader: it examines and explains the human past in general, often also using texts, documents, and reports. When it is about finds in the ground, 'Archäologie' is more precise. When it is about history as an academic discipline in general, 'Geschichtswissenschaft' fits better.
