Usage tips
Word family
The verb 'archivieren' is derived directly from the noun 'das Archiv' (the archive). The ending '-ieren' is a very common way to form verbs from nouns, often from other languages.
EXAMPLE
Wichtige historische Dokumente werden in einem speziellen Archiv aufbewahrt.
Important historical documents are kept in a special archive.
Grammar: past participle
Like all verbs ending in '-ieren', 'archivieren' forms the past participle without the prefix 'ge-'. So it is 'hat archiviert' (has archived), not 'hat ge-archiviert'.
EXAMPLE
Ich habe alle Fotos vom letzten Urlaub auf einer externen Festplatte archiviert.
I archived all the photos from my last vacation on an external hard drive.
Typical objects
You typically archive things that contain information. Common objects are 'Dokumente' (documents), 'Akten' (files), 'E-Mails' (emails), 'Fotos' (photos), or 'Daten' (data).
EXAMPLE
Bitte archivieren Sie die Rechnungen des letzten Jahres in dem dafür vorgesehenen Ordner.
Please archive last year's invoices in the designated folder.
Context: digital vs. physical
Today the word is used both for physical filing in folders and on shelves and for digital storage on computers, servers, or in the cloud.
EXAMPLE
Alte Briefe werden im Keller archiviert.
Old letters are archived in the basement.

archivieren vs sichern
to secure / save
'sichern' and 'archivieren' can both mean that you do not want to lose important data or documents. However, 'sichern' is more general: you protect something from loss, danger, or damage, for example by making a copy. 'archivieren' is used when you store documents or data in an organized, long-term way so that you can find them again later. Learners may confuse the words because an archive can also be a kind of backup. In practice: you save or back up a file to prevent loss; you archive old documents for the future.
