Usage tips
Standalone exclamation
'Au' (ouch) can stand alone or come before a sentence. As a standalone exclamation, it usually takes an exclamation mark; when the following sentence is attached directly, it is separated by a comma.
EXAMPLE
Au! Ich habe mich am Herd verbrannt.
Ouch! I burned myself on the stove.
Au, das Wasser ist viel zu heiß!
Ouch, the water is much too hot!
Exclamation with a request
When another person causes the pain, 'au' (ouch) is often followed by a direct request. Typical expressions include 'Au, hör auf!' (Ouch, stop it!) and 'Au, nicht so fest!' (Ouch, not so hard!).
