Adjectives that refer to countries or continents are often formed with the ending '-isch' in German. 'Australisch' (Australian) is derived directly from the name 'Australien' (Australia).
Er hat einen typisch australischen Akzent.
He has a typically Australian accent.
Unlike in English, nationality adjectives are written in lowercase in German as long as they are not part of a proper noun.
Ich liebe australischen Wein.
I love Australian wine.
The adjective 'australisch' (Australian) belongs to the word family of 'Australien' (Australia, the country) and 'der Australier' or 'die Australierin' (the Australian person).
Meine neue Kollegin ist Australierin und erzählt oft von ihrer Heimat.
My new colleague is Australian and often talks about her home country.
Common combinations are 'die australische Küste' (the Australian coast), 'der australische Dollar' (the Australian dollar), 'die australische Regierung' (the Australian government), or 'das australische Outback' (the Australian outback).
Die australische Küste ist weltberühmt für ihre Strände.
The Australian coast is world-famous for its beaches.
Australian-style
'australisch' and 'Australier' can both express a connection to Australia, but they are used very differently. 'australisch' is the normal adjective and fits in almost all situations: 'australische Städte' (Australian cities), 'australische Musik' (Australian music), 'australische Tiere' (Australian animals). 'Australier' as an undeclined adjective is rare and appears mainly in fixed or name-like combinations. Learners may confuse the words because 'Australier' looks like a word indicating origin. In normal sentences, however, 'australisch' is almost always correct and more natural.

Im Unterricht sprechen wir heute über australische Tiere.
In class today, we are talking about Australian animals.
Im Laden steht ein Regal mit Australier Wein und anderen Sorten aus dem Ausland.
In the shop, there is a shelf with Australian-style wine and other varieties from abroad.
