'Auswandern' (to emigrate) is a separable verb. The prefix 'aus-' comes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.

The verb consists of the prefix 'aus-' (indicating movement from inside to outside) and the verb 'wandern' (to hike/wander). Literally, then, it means to 'wander out' of one's country.

Auswandern describes permanently moving away from one's home country and emphasizes establishing a new place of residence. Ausreisen means officially leaving a country and can also refer merely to a trip. In the case of a permanent move, both terms can fit, but ausreisen focuses on the actual crossing of the border.
Im Sommer wandert Lara nach Kanada aus, um dort dauerhaft zu leben.
In the summer, Lara is emigrating to Canada to live there permanently.
