Word formation
The word is a compound of the verb 'baden' (to bathe) and the noun 'das Zimmer' (room). So it literally describes a room for bathing.

Correct preposition
Use 'im Badezimmer' (in the bathroom; dative) when talking about a location, and 'ins Badezimmer' (into the bathroom; accusative) when describing movement toward it.
EXAMPLE
Die Handtücher liegen im Badezimmer.
The towels are in the bathroom.
Typical verbs
Common verbs used in connection with the bathroom are 'putzen' (to clean), 'renovieren' (to renovate), 'einrichten' (to furnish/set up), or simply 'ins Badezimmer gehen' (to go into the bathroom).
EXAMPLE
Wir müssen am Wochenende unbedingt das Badezimmer putzen.
We absolutely have to clean the bathroom this weekend.

Badezimmer vs Bad
bathroom / bath
'das Bad' and 'das Badezimmer' mean the same room in an apartment or house in this sense. It is where you wash, shower, or bathe. 'Bad' is very short and common in everyday language; 'Badezimmer' sounds a bit more precise and complete. Both words are correct when referring to the room. The only important thing is: 'das Bad' can also have other meanings, for example a bath in the tub or a swimming pool. 'das Badezimmer' only refers to the room.
Badezimmer
Im neuen Haus ist das Badezimmer hell und groß.
In the new house, the bathroom is bright and large.
Bad
Kannst du bitte kurz warten? Das Bad ist gerade besetzt.
Could you wait a moment, please? The bathroom is occupied right now.
