'das Rohr' and 'der Bambus' can be connected because bamboo has hollow stems. Such a stem can be called a 'Rohr'. 'der Bambus', however, means the whole plant or the material from this plant. 'das Rohr' refers only to the hollow, long form, that is, the stalk itself; in addition, 'Rohr' can also occur in completely different areas. Learners may confuse the words when thinking of bamboo sticks. If the plant is meant, you say 'Bambus'. If the hollow stem or an individual piece is meant, 'Rohr' fits better.
