'bannen' in the form 'auf etwas bannen' sounds more elevated and more figurative. It is used more when the captured moment seems especially beautiful, important, or impressive. Learners may confuse the words because both fit when saving images. In everyday language, 'aufnehmen' is usually more natural; 'bannen' fits more with a particular style.
