The systematic recording and counting of all existing goods, materials, or assets in a company or warehouse. The result is the inventory.

The word is composed of 'der Bestand' (the existing stock or quantity) and 'die Aufnahme' (the recording or noting down). So it literally means recording the existing stock.

'Bestandsaufnahme' (inventory/assessment) is almost always combined with the verb 'machen' (to make/do). This fixed phrase, 'eine Bestandsaufnahme machen' (to take inventory / make an assessment), applies to both the literal and the figurative meaning.

You can recognize the figurative meaning by abstract topics. When words like 'persönlich' (personal), 'ehrlich' (honest), 'Karriere' (career), 'Projekt' (project), or 'Beziehung' (relationship) are mentioned, it is about analyzing the situation, not counting goods.

'Bewertung' and 'Bestandsaufnahme' can both help assess a situation more clearly. With a 'Bewertung', the judgment is the main focus: you say how good, important, or problematic something is. A 'Bestandsaufnahme' first describes the current state: What is there, what is missing, what is the situation like at the moment? It is often the first step before planning or a later evaluation. So if you are collecting and describing the current state, 'Bestandsaufnahme' fits. If you derive a judgment from it, 'Bewertung' fits.
