Word structure
'Bewohnt' is the past participle of the verb 'bewohnen' (to inhabit). It is used like a normal adjective to describe a noun.

The role of 'be-'
The verb 'wohnen' (to live) needs the preposition 'in' (ich wohne in einem Haus — I live in a house). The prefix 'be-' in the verb 'bewohnen' (to inhabit) makes the verb transitive, so that it requires a direct accusative object (ich bewohne ein Haus — I inhabit a house).

Even so, the opposite of 'bewohnt' is normally 'unbewohnt' (uninhabited), not simply 'verlassen'. So you say: people leave a house; a house is inhabited or uninhabited.
