A Bildhauer is primarily an artist and creates sculptures or three-dimensional works, including from wood, metal, or clay. A Steinmetz is primarily a craftsperson and works stone, for example for buildings, stairs, gravestones, or sometimes also sculptures. The words can be confused when a figure is being made out of stone. In that case, it is best to ask: Is it about art? Then 'Bildhauer' is more likely to fit. Is it about skilled stonework? Then 'Steinmetz' is more likely to fit.
