The word 'Club' (club) has two main meanings. The context makes clear which one is meant: if it is about sports, books, or hobbies, it means an association. If it is about dancing, music, and going out in the evening, it means a nightclub.

When talking about an association, people say that they are 'Mitglied in einem Club' (a member of a club) or 'einem Club beitreten' (to join a club). These verbs are not used for a nightclub.

When a nightclub is meant, the verb 'gehen' (to go) is usually used in the combination 'in den Club gehen' (to go to the club). This describes the activity of going out to dance.

That is why the words can be confused. When referring to an official membership organization, 'Verein' is usually more precise. When referring to an informal group or a nightclub, 'Club' is more likely to fit.
