Usage tips

Separable verb

'Dalassen' (to leave) is a separable verb made up of 'da' (there) and 'lassen' (to leave). In a main clause, 'da' goes at the end; in a subordinate clause, the verb stays together. In the infinitive with 'zu', 'zu' goes between the prefix and the verb.

EXAMPLE

Ich lasse die Unterlagen auf dem Schreibtisch da.

I am leaving the documents on the desk.

Sie sagt, dass sie den Schlüssel im Büro dalässt.

She says that she is leaving the key at the office.

Vergiss nicht, den Besuchern eine Nachricht dazulassen.

Don't forget to leave a message for the visitors.

Location phrase

In this sense, 'da' (there) refers to the place where something or someone is left behind. An additional location phrase can specify the place more precisely, for example with 'auf' (on), 'in' (in), 'bei' (at someone's place / near), or 'an' (at / on). In a main clause, this phrase usually comes before the separated 'da': 'Ich lasse den Koffer im Hotel da.' (I am leaving the suitcase behind at the hotel.)

Dative and object

When something is left for a person, that person takes the dative case; the thing being left usually takes the accusative case. A common pattern is 'jemandem etwas dalassen' (to leave something for someone).

I'll leave the spare key for you under the mat.

Sie hat ihrem Bruder eine Nachricht dagelassen.

She left a message for her brother.

Typical collocations

In this sense, 'dalassen' (to leave for someone) is often used with 'eine Nachricht' (a message), 'einen Zettel' (a note), 'einen Schlüssel' (a key), or 'etwas zu essen' (something to eat). These are things the other person is meant to find or receive later.
