'Die Deklaration' (the declaration) belongs to the word family of the verb 'deklarieren' (to declare). If you know that 'deklarieren' means something like 'to state officially' or 'to declare,' you can more easily work out the meaning of the noun.

The three meanings are clearly separated by context. If it is about politics or law, an official statement is meant. At customs or when traveling, it is about declaring goods. In computer science, it refers to code.

'die Erklärung' and 'die Deklaration' can both be a formal statement. But 'Erklärung' is much broader: it can make something understandable in everyday life or be an official statement. 'Deklaration' sounds clearly more formal and is used especially for official announcements, customs, or computer science. Learners may confuse the words because 'Deklaration' can sometimes seem like an official explanation. But for normal explanations in class, conversation, or everyday life, 'Deklaration' is not natural.
