The process of officially registering for something, for example for a course, an exam, a membership, or at a new place of residence.
Die Anmeldung für den Sportverein muss schriftlich erfolgen.

'Die Anmeldung' (registration) is the noun form of the separable verb 'sich anmelden' (to register / to sign up / to check in). It describes the act of registering, but also the place where one does this.
Ich muss mich noch für den Deutschkurs anmelden.
I still have to sign up for the German course.
When talking about the purpose of the registration, German uses the preposition 'für' + accusative or 'zu' + dative. To describe the place, it uses 'an' + dative.
Die Anmeldung für den Marathon ist bereits geschlossen.
Registration for the marathon is already closed.
You can recognize the meaning from context. If it is about a process, it is often an abstract concept. If a physical place is meant, prepositions like 'an der' (at the) or 'zur' (to the) often appear before it. In an IT context, words like 'Passwort' (password) or 'Benutzername' (username) appear.
Die Anmeldung für den Kurs war kompliziert.
Registration for the course was complicated.
In the sense of 'Registrierung' (registration), 'Anmeldung' (registration) is often combined with the verbs 'ausfüllen' (to fill out), 'abschicken' (to send off/submit), 'bestätigen' (to confirm), or 'benötigen' (to require/need).
Für den Kurs müssen Sie zuerst das Formular für die Anmeldung ausfüllen.

'die Teilnahme' and 'die Anmeldung' often belong to the same situation, but they do not mean the same thing. 'Anmeldung' is the step beforehand: you officially register for a course, an exam, or an event. 'Teilnahme' means that you are actually there and take part. So you can submit a registration but later not participate. The words can be confused because both often appear on forms or in connection with courses. Remember: first comes 'die Anmeldung', then comes 'die Teilnahme'.
Die Anmeldung für den Computerkurs endet am Freitag.
Registration for the computer course ends on Friday.
