Deportation vs Abschiebung

deportation

'Abschiebung' and 'Deportation' both describe a forced removal by state authorities. Today, 'Abschiebung' is used mainly in a legal context when a foreign person without the right of residence is returned to their country of origin. 'Deportation' sounds stronger and often refers to the abduction or forced transfer of individuals or whole groups to another place. The word is often used for serious historical or political crimes. Confusion arises because both involve coercion. For ordinary immigration-law procedures, 'Abschiebung' is usually more precise; for violent forced transfer, 'Deportation' is appropriate.
