The type of diagram is often determined by a word placed in front of it. This creates useful compound nouns such as 'Balkendiagramm' (bar chart), 'Kreisdiagramm' (pie chart), or 'Liniendiagramm' (line graph).

'die Darstellung' and 'das Diagramm' can both make information visible. 'Darstellung' is the more general word and can be a description, an explanation, an image, or another form of presentation. 'Diagramm' is a specific graphic representation, usually with data, numbers, or relationships. Learners may confuse the words because a diagram or chart is a type of 'Darstellung'. But if you specifically mean a graphic with data, 'Diagramm' is more precise. If you are talking about the overall form of the explanation, 'Darstellung' fits better.
