The noun 'die Dichtung' (poetry/seal) comes from the verb 'dichten'. This verb has two meanings: to compose literary texts ('dichten' — to write poetry) and to seal something technically. This double origin explains the two different meanings of the noun.

You can recognize the meaning easily from the context. If the topic is literature, art, authors, or periods, it refers to literary 'Dichtung' (poetry). If the topic is technology, trades, engines, or pipes, it refers to the technical component.

In a technical context, a 'Dichtung' (seal) is often 'ausgetauscht' (replaced), 'ersetzt' (replaced), or 'erneuert' (renewed). When it no longer works, it is 'porös' (porous), 'undicht' (leaky), or 'verschlissen' (worn out).
Der Kaffeeautomat funktioniert nicht mehr, weil eine Dichtung porös ist.

'die Literatur' and 'die Dichtung' can both refer to literary texts. 'Literatur' is the broader and very common modern term for written works such as novels, poems, and dramas. 'Dichtung' sounds more artistic and somewhat elevated; it often makes people think especially of poems, dramas, or classic works. The words can be confused because 'Dichtung' can be part of 'Literatur'. In everyday life and at school, 'Literatur' is usually more neutral. 'Dichtung' fits better when you want to emphasize the poetic or artistic side.
