'der Autor' and 'der Dramatiker' can both be people who write texts. 'Autor' is the more general term and fits many types of texts, for example novels, articles, or nonfiction books. 'Dramatiker' is more specific: he writes plays, that is, texts for the stage. The words can be confused because a playwright is also an author. But 'Dramatiker' says more precisely what kind of texts he writes. If it is not specifically about theater, 'Autor' is more natural. If it is about plays, the stage, or dramatic literature, 'Dramatiker' fits.
