The word is made up of 'Eil-' (from 'Eile' [haste], meaning quick/urgent) and 'Meldung' (report/news item). So it is literally a report delivered in haste.

'Eilmeldung' is used only when something is especially important and urgent. It often comes immediately, sometimes even during a broadcast or as a quick alert on your phone. Learners may confuse the words because every 'Eilmeldung' is a 'Nachricht'. But not every 'Nachricht' is an 'Eilmeldung'. 'Eilmeldung' sounds stronger and is only appropriate for very current, important events.
