'Die Meldung' (the report/notification) is the noun corresponding to the verb 'melden' (to report/register). The ending '-ung' forms nouns from verbs, and these are always feminine (they have the article 'die').

The context helps distinguish the meanings. If it is about media (radio, newspaper), it means a news report. If it is about authorities (office, police), it means an official registration. In technology (computer, app), it is a system message.

A 'Meldung' tends to be short and quickly passes on important information. Learners may confuse the words because both can contain news.
