einreden vs überzeugen

to convince

'überzeugen' and 'einreden' both have to do with someone believing something. 'überzeugen' is usually neutral or positive: you bring someone to an opinion with reasons or evidence. 'einreden', on the other hand, often sounds negative. It means that someone is made to believe something through repeated talking, even though it is uncertain or perhaps false. You can also talk yourself into believing something ('sich etwas einreden'). The words can be confused because in both cases, a conviction is formed in the end. But 'überzeugen' fits when there are good reasons, while 'einreden' is more about pressure, doubt, or false ideas.
