'Einvernehmen' (agreement) is a word from formal written language that is often used in contracts, official letters, or the business world. In normal everyday speech, it is rather rare.
Die Vertragsänderung erfolgte im gegenseitigen Einvernehmen.
The contract change was made by mutual agreement.
The word consists of 'ein-' (in the sense of 'together' or 'in agreement') and 'Vernehmen' (understanding, perceiving). So it literally means that the parties understand or perceive a matter in the same way.
Zwischen den beiden Parteien konnte kein Einvernehmen hergestellt werden.
No agreement could be reached between the two parties.
Common verbs are 'Einvernehmen erzielen' (to reach agreement) or 'Einvernehmen herstellen' (to establish agreement). A very common expression is also 'in bestem Einvernehmen' (on the best of terms), used to describe an amicable separation.

'das Verständnis' and 'das Einvernehmen' both have to do with getting along well with others. 'Verständnis' is more about being able to understand another person's situation, feelings, or reasons. You do not necessarily have to agree. 'Einvernehmen' more strongly means that several people agree with each other or agree to a solution. Especially in the phrase 'im Einvernehmen mit' (in agreement with), it is clearly about consent or agreement. Learners may confuse the words because both sound positive. As a practical rule: Verständnis can be one-sided; Einvernehmen usually needs both sides.
Die Abteilung hat den neuen Plan im Einvernehmen mit der Leitung geändert.
The department changed the new plan in agreement with management.
Die Chefin zeigt Verständnis, weil Mehmet wegen seines kranken Kindes früher gehen muss.
